Climate & community
Digital sustainability is only one piece of the puzzle. I enjoy contributing to local climate initiatives, from drafting municipal environmental action plans to conservation work.
Throughout my career, my work has centred on making the digital world accessible and environmentally responsible. When I can, I indulge my passion for wildlife photography and spend time hiking with my family.
The best ideas come from teams where every perspective is heard. I work best in cross-functional groups, training partners in constructive, hurt-free design critique rather than throwing work over the wall.
There is always a way to test a prototype, even when time or budget is tight. I get user perspectives into the room early and often to correct wonky hypotheses and check personal blind spots.
Starting in educational software early in my career taught me that accessibility cannot be an afterthought. I help organisations build the governance and automated checks required to ship compliant work from first release.
The digital web has an enormous carbon footprint, and systems designers are well-placed to reduce page weight and server load. I founded the SustainableUX conference and serve as an Invited Expert for the W3C Web Sustainability Guidelines.
I work to reduce the environmental footprint of the web as an invited expert with the W3C Web Sustainability Guidelines (WSG) working group and by championing sustainable digital practices across the industry. Alongside standards work, I regularly mentor emerging designers, career switchers, and product teams on sustainable UX, accessibility governance, and portfolio development.

I returned to photography during the pandemic, documenting common and overlooked bird species with binoculars and a telephoto lens. Every bird has character, even the scavengers.

After fifteen years working across the United States, I am back in Oxfordshire, rediscovering ancient walking trails, stone circles, and introducing my family to the landscape.
